From A Hobby to a Whole Herd –
Alpacas & Handmade Fiber Creations!
It all started because my husband suggested that I get a hobby after completing my PhD and deciding to give up my traveling job - I was now going to have more time available. I always wanted to learn how to knit. After attending a fiber festival at the Ashland County Fairgrounds, I came home and told my husband that I signed up for a knitting class and I wanted to get alpacas to learn how to process the material to use for knitting.
If I was going to get a hobby, I may as well go all in…
After doing extensive research, meeting several local alpaca breeders, and building out a safe space for the animals, we got our first 6 alpacas in July 2017. Today, we have relocated to West Salem and expanded our herd to 12 boys - watched over by our guardian dog, Winnie. After a few years of shearing, we have produced enough fiber to have some processed into yarn and rug yarn. With his grandfather’s floor loom, my husband weaves rag rugs and will soon be putting our alpaca rug yarn to use. We opened our Farm Store in November 2024. We not only offer the soft yarns from our animals but other alpaca products, and my husband’s woven rugs. We look forward to sharing our experiences we have had in our journey with our alpacas!
